White Flag
This is the saddest story I have ever heard. A story filled with crushed dreams that were once held by a callow soldier who only wished to return to his farm in Virginia as a hero of war. He was called into duty, leaving his wife and two year old daughter at home, and was sent to the front lines with little training, but like many young soldiers he soon found himself on a stringent battlefield with no where to turn. He, and his squad of fifteen, were sent to infringe a town just on the outskirts of the enemy's encampment. The mission was simple, permeate the town in oil and set it aflame. The soldier exhorted the general to reconsider in hopes of saving many innocent lives but no matter how much he pleaded, the general would not change the tactics. His squad soon found themselves stuck in the town surrounded by enemy soldiers in all directions.  Bullets flew through the smoke as the sound of gun shots rang in the soldier's ears. The dire situation seemed like it would never ameliorate as they found themselves running low on ammo. The fight seemed to last a millennium, as each man found blood running down their sides as stray bullets hit their marks. Fighting in hopes to see his wife and daughter smiling as he came home as a hero of war, the soldier soon found himself going mad as that dream started to fade and his body began to be overcome with lassitude. He kept fighting with blood flying through the air and men, with drivel cascading down their mouths, died one by one. A bombastic man who sat next to him was shot in the head as he ran to get more ammo, but the young soldier, who could only see the farm he so dearly wanted to be on, did not even flinch. Fear soon engulfed the soldier as he ran into the open battlefield. He walked on through the bullets and haze. An enemy soldier exhorted him to stop, but soldier pressed on. The enemy, lifting his rifle, fired. The shells jumped through the smoke and into the dirt that was permeated with blood. The soldier stopped dead in his tracks and collapsed face first into the sand beneath him. He was found holding onto a picture of his wife and child and, a flag, in his right hand, that was white as stone.
This is a vignette I needed to do for my English class. Not the best story but my classmates found it very entertaining. I might drawl a sketch for it later.
